Home physiotherapy in Lebanon: rehabilitation without leaving the house

Across Lebanon, more people than ever need rehabilitation, and getting to a clinic has never been harder. That gap is quietly reshaping how physiotherapy is delivered here, and it is why more of our patients are choosing to recover at home rather than fight traffic, transport costs and long waits to be seen.

This is not a small shift. The World Health Organization has warned of soaring needs for trauma treatment and rehabilitation in Lebanon, on top of a health system already strained by years of economic crisis. At the same time, the everyday demand never went away: back pain, sports injuries, post-surgery recovery, strokes and the slow stiffening that comes with age. The need is high. The obstacle is access.

Why rehabilitation demand is rising

Several things are happening at once, and they all point in the same direction:

  • An ageing population. Older adults make up a growing share of Lebanon's population, and they are the group most likely to need help after a fall, a joint replacement or a stroke, and most likely to lose independence without it.
  • More people recovering from injury and surgery. Fractures, operations and trauma all leave people needing structured rehabilitation to walk, work and move normally again.
  • Chronic pain that never got treated. When money is tight, care gets postponed. A lot of the back, neck and knee pain we see has been left to build for months or years.
  • Awareness is growing. More people now understand that physiotherapy is not a last resort. It is often the treatment that prevents surgery, medication and long-term disability in the first place.

The real barrier is access, not need

Here is the part that does not make headlines: plenty of people who need rehabilitation simply stop going. Not because it is not working, but because getting there is exhausting and expensive. Transport and fuel costs add up. Traffic across Beirut turns a short appointment into a half-day. For an older patient, someone on crutches after surgery, or a parent with no one to drive them, that friction is enough to abandon a recovery plan halfway through, which is exactly when quitting does the most damage.

Rehabilitation only works if it is consistent. A brilliant treatment plan that you attend twice and then drop will not restore your movement. This is the problem home-visit physiotherapy is built to solve.

What physiotherapy actually does in recovery

Whether it happens in a clinic or a living room, good physiotherapy is doing the same core work:

  • Restoring movement after injury, surgery or a long spell of inactivity, so joints and muscles work the way they should.
  • Managing pain with hands-on treatment and targeted exercise instead of relying on painkillers alone.
  • Rebuilding strength and balance, which is what keeps older adults on their feet and prevents the next fall.
  • Preventing long-term disability by getting people moving early and safely, before stiffness and weakness set in for good.

Start early and most of this is straightforward. Leave it too long and the same problems become slower and harder to reverse, which is a big part of why early rehabilitation matters so much right now.

Why home-visit physiotherapy fits this moment

Treating people in their own homes is not a compromise. In many cases it is the better option:

  • No transport, no traffic, no missed sessions. The single biggest reason people quit rehabilitation disappears when the therapist comes to them.
  • Treatment in your real environment. We can adapt your exercises to your actual bed, stairs, chair and bathroom, the places where movement really has to work.
  • Family can be involved. For older or post-surgical patients, having a relative learn how to help makes recovery safer between visits.
  • Better consistency. Regular, reliable sessions are what turn a plan into a result, and home visits make regular far easier to sustain.

At FixUrMotion we offer the same full assessment and hands-on treatment at home across Beirut as we do in the clinic, so the choice comes down to what works for your life, not what your recovery needs.

Conditions that respond well to home physiotherapy

  • Recovery after surgery: knee and hip replacements, ligament repairs, spinal operations
  • Fractures and post-immobilisation stiffness once the cast comes off
  • Stroke and neurological rehabilitation, where regular practice at home is everything
  • Back, neck and sciatic pain that makes travelling to a clinic painful in itself
  • Balance problems and fall prevention for older adults
  • Post-natal recovery and general reconditioning after a long illness

How to know it is time to start

If pain, stiffness or weakness has lasted more than a couple of weeks, if you are recovering from surgery or a fall, or if getting around has become harder than it used to be, that is the moment to get assessed, not months later once habits and compensations have set in. Rehabilitation is almost always faster and simpler the earlier it starts. And in a country where reaching care is the hard part, letting that care come to you can be the difference between finishing your recovery and giving up on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is home physiotherapy as effective as going to a clinic?
For most musculoskeletal, post-surgical and mobility problems, yes. The assessment, hands-on treatment and exercise progression are the same; only the location changes. Home visits often improve results because people miss fewer sessions and practise in the real space where they move every day. Some cases still benefit from clinic equipment, and a good physiotherapist will tell you when that applies.
Who is home-visit physiotherapy best for in Lebanon?
Anyone who struggles to travel: older adults, people recovering from surgery or a fracture, patients with limited mobility or neurological conditions, new mothers, and busy professionals. Given the cost and time of getting across Beirut, home care removes the single biggest reason people abandon rehabilitation halfway through.
How soon after surgery or injury should rehabilitation start?
Usually sooner than people expect. Early, guided movement helps control pain, protect the healing area, prevent stiffness and lower the risk of long-term disability. The exact timing depends on your surgeon or doctor's clearance, but waiting until you feel fully better often makes recovery longer and harder. An early assessment sets the safe starting point.
